This one was a little disappointing. I was hoping for more detail about how Carson outfitted his expeditions, the gear he used, the obstacles he overcame … but this was a dry retelling of the less interesting parts of his life.
I’m in Texas, and I’ve encountered enough rattlers and copperheads that I don’t venture out without steel-toed boots and snake gaiters. You definitely want gaiters specifically rated against snakebite.
I think that whole thing about “most bites are on the upper body” comes from people trying to...
I lived in Des Moines for five years. I don’t have any hunting recommendations but I do recommend the loose meat sandwiches at Maid-Rite and the tenderloin sandwich at the Machine Shed. Also the Iowa chop pork chops on the grill.
Dallas fans, talk to me about the Jamie Benn hit on Devon Toews. I can’t stand the Avalanche but Benn is looking more and more like a cheap shot artist. I’m amazed there was no penalty on what was a clear shot to the head.

Sandinista!
You guys are young, naming the bands my kids listened to. I was more of an Iggy-Sex Pistols-Clash-Pogues kind of guy. To me, Green Day is a “new” band.
Crazy game tonight in Winnipeg. I still loathe the Avalanche so I was glad to see it. Interesting that all the home teams have won game 1s (so far, waiting to see on Vancouver-Nashville).
My Red Wings didn’t make it so I’m hoping a Canadian team can get to the finals.
When I’m on a multiday hunt, I carry a journal and write in it to help pass the time, especially in the slow parts or the middle of the day. It’s a way to chronicle my adventures, and it helps me remember some of the special non-hunting experiences like hearing music from a sunset church service...
I have a thing about finding obscure, little-known battles to read about. Anyone can be an expert on Gettysburg or Normandy or Waterloo; how much do you know about the Falklands or the China-Burma-India theater?
So now I’m reading this, and it’s really good:
