I moved to MT just north of Bozeman this past fall and looking forward to hunting as a resident from now on. Interested in finding some hunting partners, especially for elk. Archery is my first choice but also do some rifle and shotgun. I will be hunting elk, deer, antelope, turkey, and...
In flux at the moment. House sold in Cape Cod and exploring a possible move to MT. Will be checking out some areas in SW MT as possible places to live and heading to eastern MT for the lope hunt.
I have a 900 MT antelope tag and plan to be in MT for the last 2 weeks of Sept. I’ve never hunted antelope but looking forward to trying spot a stalk hunt this fall. On my own I’ll prob head somewhere in the eastern part of the state. If anyone is also planning to hunt and wants to team up let...
No, but my thought are this: MT, WY, ID and CO are top choices. Drawing WY w/o points is about 10% so put in for a pref point this year for future use. I have a pref point for MT and I at least know some areas so I wouldn’t be starting at ground level- and till I get my first elk that’s a huge...
Had a lot of fun, learned a ton, now hooked on elk hunting and will be going back this year and hopefully everyone after... but ate $1200 tag soup. Hunted with another newb I connected with here and we both brought a lot of research info that helped. Found elk about half the days we hunted but...
Glad to hear it played out the way it did but it def feels like hitting a bear with a rock could also get a very different response. Looking back do you think that since you already had your gun in hand you could have also just tried to back away and let him move on?
Hey y’all-
I hunt in griz areas and also heading to Alaska for a caribou hunt this year but I have never had a griz encounter. I’m not a paranoid type but I am a prepared type.
I know all the bear prevention stuff:
- keep a scent free clean camp
- move meat far from gut pile
- bear fence as...
Your broad question, short response with lack of many specifics makes it feel like you’re looking for everyone else to do the homework for you. Research the basics and come with some some specific questions and there are probably a lot of us here happy to help narrow down your plan. Welcome to...
I often explain to new hunters that there are 101 ways to mess up your shot opportunity or things to go wrong - and one of them usually will. I experienced a new one today. Got me wondering, what’s your weirdest, most surprising, or other thing that went wrong and cost you a shot?
Mine today...
Sounds a lot like my trip except I just got back to NY after driving to Dillon area, hunting archery for 2 weeks and then staying for the MT rifle opener, then driving back 5k miles total with no meat to show for it. Congrats on a good trip and good job making it sound easy!
Nice! And now some [possibly] dumb questions... I’m a long time east coast archery hunter and never paid much attention to gun hunting options. Did my first western archery hunt this year and carried a 44 for griz protection but never imagined hunting with it and never imagined or thought that...
