Thank you to all of you who share information on this forum. It has been invaluable to a new elk hunter like me.
I just got back from a Wyoming archery cow hunt with a friend of mine. This was the first hunt he had been on with his own tag and my first exposure to elk hunting period. What. An. Experience. We saw 7 different bulls, some of which were 6x6 and 7x6. Since we had no experience with calls we decided he would try spot and stalk.
We arrived in town early enough Sunday to run out to our hunting area and glass for a bit. We watched a huge bull chase 2 cows down a mountain into a little meadow where he bugled, raked trees, and wallowed. It was amazing. The next afternoon on his first stalk he got to within 30 yards of a cow and bull and was able to make a good shot. It was the most amazing outdoor experience of my life and I cannot wait to do it again. I'm planning on doing an OTC hunt in Colorado now to feed this new addiction.
